Urban Legend (1998)

Based on a University campus, Urban Legend explores the horror of a mass murderer who exploits urban legends to perpetrate gruesome acts. One girl decides to investigate further and becomes the centre of unwanted attention.

Urban Legend is one of those horrors that are really quite stupid. For three quarters, it works well as a mystery horror. One is speculating at "who can it be" and expecting the worst for likable characters. But it ends in laughs as characters appear from nowhere for no reason or a character apparently dies, raises for one more attempt at murder and "dies"again.

Its that kind of cliched rubbish that relegates Urban Legend to the bottom of the barrel. One may wonder why the director attempted such paradoxical, last gasp twists when the plot had run its course and resolutions met. It probably indicates a weak plot needing filling.

Cheap buy only.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

When a couple moves into a new home, they decide to monitor strange events with a camera. Horror ensues when some sort of meta-physical being begins to manifest itself more and more.

In the documentary self shot style, Paranormal Activity shows everything from the coupes camera's perspective. For most part, this happens to be a masterful device in story telling. Slight shadows and movements in the night shown whole the couple sleep. But what is its strength, is also the weakness. The story can only be developed so far from this perspective and thus the movie ends with many holes.

Apart from a stale beginning and empty end, Paranormal is a good jump about kind of horror.

Die Hard (1998)

Die Hard is the first of a series of action movies in the series starring Bruce Willis. His character, a New York cop, becomes embroiled in a hostage situation while visiting a work Christmas party in Los Angeles. He becomes the spanner in the works of both the terrorists and rescuers alike, while attempting to save the day.

Die Hard is the perfect action movie for me. This is mostly attributable to Wilis, whose curious yet real style, along with brilliant wit engages and entertains. I like that Bruce does get shot and injured and does show it for the remainder of the film. In this Die Hard, he is forced to be bare foot and walks on glass cutting himself. He then has a visible limp for the remainder. Its refreshing to see that.

I saw this on BluRay but I cant think of a reason why you would spend more for the blu-ray. It essentially looked DVD quality. Otherwise a must get.

The Skeleton Key (2005)

The Skeleton Key, a New Orleans based horror/thriller based around African myth magic Hoodoo. When home nurse Caroline moves into a mysterious house, dark secrets emerge. She takes it upon herself to help a captive old man with deadly consequences.

The Skeleton Key does a very good job in maintaining suspense. It avoids prosaic scenes, like travel sequences, to maintain a suspense aura. Coupled with some good acting and an intersting plot, the Skelton Key becoms a good watch.

Worth buying.

War Inc. (2008)

War Inc is a war business satire based in a war ravaged Afganistan piss-take, Turqistan.

As far as satire's go, War Inc is terrible. It satirises too much in such a poor manner. It just feels tacky. For example, a tank would roll by with a square piece of cardboard on it with some colourful ad. Sure it is an interesting political commentary but its so poorly done. One could almost see the sticky tape on it. The acting is so shoddy and the plot so uninteresting it just makes it meaningless.

Don't bother with this one.

Animal Kingdom (2010)

Animal Kingdom is an Australian Crime Drama loosely based around Melbournes Walsh Street police shootings. The story revolves around the younger and diffident member of a Melbourne crime family and their battles with Melbourne police.

After shooting the policeman, the family goes into damage control often turning on themselves. Its an interesting plot with interesting consequences for its characters.

A fine example of a well cast and well acted Australian film.

Mr. Beans Holiday (2007)

Mr Beans Holiday is a movie length addendum to popular British comedy Mr Bean. After winning a French holiday in Cannes, Mr Bean bumbles his way to Cannes, befriending a young boy along the way after separating him from his father.

Being a fan of Bean, this movie held some expectation. It delivered endless laughs, mainly through Rowan Atkinson's genious and fun sketches. The story essentially did not matter, as the movie tends to move from sketch to sketch without issue, maintaining a consistent laugh factor.

Indeed, many sketches bare resemblances to the TV show sketches. That didn't bother me, since modernising bean to current formats can't be bad. Thinking about the plot would only distract one from the comic genious.

Worth getting for all with even a slice of humour.

2012 BluRay (2009)

2012, an epic action disaster movie explores the theorized phenomenon that the world will end in the year 2012. When the Earth's core and mantle start overheating, panic sets in and relationships are stretched to the limits.

2012 has all you would expect from a disaster movie. Incredible CG graphics complement an immersive, panic stricken planet. It's thus a great bluray experience.

Undoubtedly, 2012 runs for too long. The formulaic nature of all disaster flicks makes the ending drag on; we all know what will happen, we dont need to beat around the bush.

Worth getting on Bluray.

The Kite Runner (2003)

The Kite Runner is a novel that follows the upbringing of main character Amir, a well off Afghan boy and his servant friend, Hassan. An enjoyable childhood for Amir peaks when he wins a kite flying event however a tragic event, where Hassan if brutally bullied changes their lives for a long time. Amir grows older but finds that there is only one solution to help him really grow up.

The Kite Runner is an excellent first novel for Hosseini. A drama where the tempo is perfectly managed for full emotional effect, Hosseini draws every ounce of emotional effect from a provocative story. The story does become predictable, where one can predict the denouement in a sort of symmetry or syllogism.

Nevertheless, a fantastically written story worth reading.

Couples Retreat (2009)

Couples Retreat is a comedy based around four couples who head out to an Island resort only to find that they signed up for more than they bargained for. Their marriages are counseled and probed strictly such that cracks appear. All four couples have to find ways to mend issues and find happiness.

Couples Retreat probably succeeds more as a drama than a comedy. It is scattered with moments of gravity and profundity that give the movie a sense of meaning. Unfortunately much of the comedy is weak. For example, the pious retreat leader is found to have a shack where he plays guitar hero. Vince Vaughn then sharks him in a game to seal escape.

Nonetheless, the concoction of varied characters and sexual innuendo lend to some very funny moments.

Not a show stopper but a nice escape on a rainy day. Rental.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Hot tub time machine is a comedy about, well, a hot tub time machine. It follows four men who decide on a winter escape to a former winter playground resort. When they find it derelict their despair is saved by the hot tub time machine, which sends them back to an earlier, livelier time.

I don't know about others, but when I read such a title, I cringe. Unfortunately, this movie is a full time cringe. The plot is terribly forced and really made little sense. One sits and wonders why is this being watched. The acting is mediocre as is the whole movie.

There are funny moments, there's no taking that back. So there is that but its not worth sitting through this incredibly patronizing affair.

Rental if there really is nothing else, and you have read all your books.

Hungry Kids of Hungary - Escapades.

Escapades, by Australian act Hungry Kids of Hungary is their risk taking indie pop debut. In the bracket 'if you like Mumford and Sons', Escapades delivers and uplifting repertoire that has proven successful on radio and won't fail to deliver on CD.

The repertoire is probably highlighted best by my favourite track No Returns, a gripping strip back song with melancholy written all over it, contrasts the early ubpeat pop tracks. Its followed by a a great guitar track with subtle nuances, Eat your heart out. Every song is anew discovery, a new sound, a new formula.

I found it flawless, well worth getting.

Interpol (2010)

I'm no music expert but I know what I like. New York's Interpol self titled release in a dense soundscape full of layered guitar brilliance. Its not a risky move forward by any standards but surely equals Interpols earlier albums.

The Book of Eli is a crafty action adventure, based in future post-war America. The barren wastelands create a rich backdrop for a long walk. Denzel Washington, Eli, has been walking for a very long time, with a stoic goal of delivering a book to somebody, somebody he doesn't know. With time, bits of information are released to evolve a violent plot, there are others who want the book just as much and will stop at nothing to retrieve it.

The Book of Eli is beautifully shot; in a noir style much like Sin City or Kill Bill it produces some stunning comic strip shots. Unfortunately, the plot isn't really that interesting. It falls down because the motivating factors of protagonist and sundry are just not very believable. Its all very thin. The ending is cute; its a result of a movie cautiously releasing facts, the end being the the most curious fact of the whole. The action scenes are stunning but the romantic sub-plot is incredibly thin.

Unfortunately, despite the BluRay being and incredible visual experience; I would doubt there would be great rewatch value. Rental.

Journey to the End of the Night - Celine

Journey to the End of the Night follows one mans travels after escaping the war. A reluctant soldier in WW1, Ferdinand escapes to try and find his life. A love-them-and-leave-them womaniser, Ferdinand travels to colonial Africa where he tries to find a new life.

Here he meets the untrustworthy Robinson. After a inauspicious meeting, Ferdinand travels to New York to find another life. It works for a while but Ferdinand never settles. He returns to Paris where a career in Medicine develops. Robinson reappears and causes drama's through to the end.

Journey is a darkly humorous read. It consistently dampens your mood with despair and dread and then breaks the spell with exquisite wit. Its like a literary Black Books, very wrong but somehow right. Definitely worth reading.

Traitor (2008)

Traitor is a War on Terror drama that follows American spy/terrorist Samir. Samir is implanted in a Yemeni prison where he is recruited to a terrorist group. He gets drawn into bomb making and killing as American agents close him down. It comes down to a mass terrorist attack on American soil and the loss of life.

Traitor is a very good drama, it builds a dramatic tension and builds the strength of character. It did drag on for a bit long but in the end, the twist is well worth it. Its clever and well written and should have ended on the twist.

Well worth a BluRay purchase.

The Abyss (1989)

The Abyss is a sci fi thriller directed by James Cameron which is almost entirely set underwater. A civilian undersea mining operation is enlisted to salvage a nuclear warhead. Soon problems begin however complications arise when a strange underwater alien lifeform makes contact.

The Abyss, despite looking its age, has some pretty cool effects that you'd expect from Cameron. The plot line is pretty typical and un-challenging for most of the movie; betrayals and love interests and nothing ground breaking.

The sci fi component takes over as the movie nears its end and its here where the more unique content comes to the fore. Whether you like this movie really depends on how much you like the sci fi part. Personally I do making it worth a buy.

Too old for Blu Ray but worth buying if your a sci fi fan. Hire it if not.

The Soprano's is an American TV series about the Italian Mafia in New Jersey and New York and head boss, Tony Soprano. Spanning six series, The Soprano's delves deep into the psyche of of Tony, his family and his henchman through personal development, relationships, confrontation and betrayal.

The Soprano's is often brutally real through scenes of violence, rape and dialogue. Tony Soprano's life is explored in the most depth. His emotions are laid out to be judged through the fly on the wall psychiatric sessions. Often contradiction and hypocrisy are also clearly shown; through moments of tenderness and brute violence.

The Soprano's also explores many current day issues, such as racism, sexism, homophobia and the war on terror. Its truly a rare gem of American television. It doesn't patronize the viewers by twisting the story to grab viewers. It is character driven from first to last and one will tend the like the characters; even the malevolent.

Indeed the quality of production, acting and writing does not wane through six seasons. It is an incredible accomplishment. Like a good novel, one tends to miss it after its end.

Nonetheless, all good things come to an end. Despite being very adults only, I declare it a must buy for TV lovers.

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)

The Men Who Stare at Goats is a war comedy that shows the US Army's New Earth division, a hippy supernatural research group and a reporters attempted expose on it. Bob, the reporter, follows the most talented of the hippy soldiers Lyn on an adventure to try an write an article that would make him as a reporter.

That is the basis of some great comedy. George and Ewan are great on screen together as the freaky concepts are explored, like mentally bursting clouds or mentally knocking over goats. Its fun for a while but on the whole there's probably not too much there. Its a comedy, so we won't look for substance. Its fun, and that's what matters.

The BluRay version is not really worth it as it doesn't really add anything.

Coffin Rock (2009)

Coffin Rock is an Australian horror thriller that revolves around an IVF couple in a small coastal town.   When a drunken night goes awry with another man, Jessie gets pregnant. The initial euphoria turns sour when the fact that the father may be a psychopath.

Coffin Rock doesn't succeed in many ways. Its acting is B Grade and many of the 'set-ups' are really quite forced and strange. Many scenes feel just a bit stupid, like 'When would that ever happen?'.   The good thrillers often succeed because they feel real and possible.

Which is a shame because the screenplay ultimately shows an interesting cleverness.   More could have been done with it to perhaps get it up to a Wolf Creek standard.

Rental at best.

Baraka in not narrated; its a visual feast along with a stunning soundtrack. It shows the ancient and obscure as well as the modern and massive in various angles and time lapse.

An incredible achievement of cinematography. Well worth the BluRay for the fullest experience.

Hot Shots (1991)

Hot Shots is a comedy spoof of movies such as Top Gun. Starring Charlie Sheen, Topper faces some enemies in the US air force while the comedy ensues.

Its all about the one line gags and giggles. For fans of slapstick word-plays and sketch like routines; Hot shots delivers in spades.

Not much more to say; visuals, sound and acting are poor but it doesn't actually matter.

Worth buying since it should be pretty cheap.

The Blues Brothers is an Action Comedy that follows John Belushi and Dan Akroyd's mission from God; the save their childhood school. They are forced to avoid police as they search for way's for their reformed band to make money.

The Blues Brothers is a classic in many ways. The musical sequences are fun and not overly choreographed. The action scenes are fun and over the top. There are classic appearances from people like James Brown and classic dialogues and scenes throughout.

Its just a movie that never gets old. Worth getting the DVD, too old for BluRay.

When A Stranger Calls is a horror remake of the 70's movie of the same name.   A babysitter is harrassed by an unknown caller until an inevitable confrontation occurs. A mad scramble ensues in her attempt to save the children.

This horror is the most cliched piece of viewing one can find.   A babysitter being watch by a mysterious stranger? The concept may have been terrifying in the 70's but the need to make money and a remake has brought this tired formula back to the screen.

As a horror it barely succeeds and there is even hardly any comic value in the absurdity of the events. It's just immensely cliched.

The overall presentation can't be faulted: more, the cynicism must really be saved at the decision to make a remake; has 30 years not aged the idea?

Brainless waste of time, don't bother.

A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens

'A Tale' is a historic drama at the time of the French Revolution and the Storming of the Bastille. Based in London and Paris, 'A Tale' is one of the the best selling novels of all time. Dickens explores the differences and contrasts between revolutionaries, aristocrats and between London and Paris.

It is an intriguing read from an era of trouble and revolt. One gets the the sense that London is a pristine wilderness, set on a grassy meadow whereas Paris is despairing, dark and brutal. The characters too show glimpses of dark but ultimately heroism on the back drop of very real drama.

Thus 'A Tale' is an exceptional piece of work. The setting is immersive and the characters flourish in the style of Dickens. The plot is undoubtedly a fine piece of work making the novel a well rounded piece of work.

Well worth getting.

Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco

Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum is a novel that explores the mystery of the Templar's and their history. The main characters are publishers and writers who have an unquenchable curiosity about the templars and mysticism. Their journey of enlightenment leads to trouble as they unveil hidden secrets.

Eco's novel is an intellectual masterpiece. It's a read that teaches one things one never thought to learn about. Its delves into esotericism and it is esoteric itself. Yet it isn't clumsy. What needs exploration is explored whereas other points will need self teaching and referral. Such is the book, its a book for learning. One will need to reference wikipedia otherwise there really is no point.

The narrative can falter at times, stuck in a cacophany if idea's, hunches and unknown names. Most notably this occurs onto the approach of the denouement. It makes one want a worthy end. The end is worthy but perhaps more understated than I imagined.

Thus Eco has produced an amazing achievement for the intellectuals. It's isn't a pick up and read for the masses but, of course, that can be left to Dan Brown.

If you want to learn something, get the book and take your time with it. If you have not attention span, do not bother.

Band of Brothers Blu Ray (2001)

Band of Brothers is a TV serial based on Easy Company and their journey through Europe during World War 2. After Parashooting in on D-Day the soldiers are faced with an instant reality check as they are scattered far and wide. After regrouping, they proceed onto their objectives. Men are lost and battles won. The winter provides harsh conditions as the war continues. They eventually end up in Germany where the cruelty of the Nazi's is apparent.

Band of Brothers is truly a remarkable achievement. The 10 episode series achieves standards not seen on TV very often. The cinematography, sound, writing and narrative are not only good, they are, at times, astonishing. Soldiers will reveal their experiences and thoughts which expands ones appreciation (or otherwise) of war.

Battles are played out in stunning realism. Often, in other series or movies, battles turn into a spaghetti soup of flashes and sound. In BoB, the tactical battle is brilliantly portrayed with clever camera angles and dialogue.

Finally, in touching stroke of realism, the actual soldiers which are portrayed precede each episode with moment of explanation and comment. Such a small touch adds incredible value to the experience.

War is a terrible thing. Without embellishment, BoB shows this to be true. Its something that needs to be told right - even for those who aren't interested.

The BluRay version brings BoB into amazing crispness and bone jarring sound.

An undoubted must have.

Fool's Gold is an action comedy that follows the trials of Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, in finding a treasure; their life long study and obsession. There are others, of course, who want the treasure which leads to action, adventure and some laughs.

Fool's Gold is very clean cut. It takes no risks and doesn't stray to the fringe. That is probably, where it fails. Its simpleton comedy for the masses; for example, making fun of the stupid girl ad nauseam. There are chuckles here and there but nothing memorable. The action scenes too, are formulaic and simple; definitely not edge of your seat stuff.

Matthew and Kates on screen relationship saves Fools Gold from the bottom of the barrel. Although their emotional connection is forced and under-developed by the wafer thin concepts, their onscreen tit for tat makes for some fun.

Worth getting if you like a treasure hunt or the star's, otherwise probably a weekly rental.

Dead Space PS3

Dead Space is a gore shoot-em up that goes where very few shoot-em up's have gone before. Based on a space ship, the story goes that the ship has been infested with awkwardly scary aliens.

The setting proves a backdrop for some incredible game play. There's weightless game play, shootem up and much shadow creeping. There is lots to love about this shooter; from the health bar, to the unique AI to the various tools at your disposal.

The game is mostly linear, so reptition is the key to success. Being frugal is also a key. Using too much ammo or other resource tends to affect you down path; like being stuck behind a malfunctioning doors because of the lack of a resource.   Incremental saving is the key here.

The highlight of the game is the opponent and the ambience.   The alien can lie stricken, feigning death and then attack when you least expect it. Even with much gameplay I would forget at times that this happened.   The ambience of shadows and distant clunking sounds really can give you the goose bumps; its dense and very real. Eventual death is infuriating and grotesque and also very real.

I found the learning curve pretty high; its not a pick it up and play kind of game. The repitition ended up annoying me but the game cannot be discounted as a horror masterpiece.   Not a unique story but definitely a unique implementation. Worth getting; good bang for your buck.

NBA 09 PS3

I have always been a fan of basketball games. Its a sport that transfers well to the console or PS3. So I bought 09, cheap now, for the occasional hoop fun.

But 09 just didn't do the trick for me. Game play doesn't seem fluid and I found it hard to pick up and play. The training centre is a great idea; like Fifa 10's run around pitch, one can play on during load's. But here its not as fun. The set training routines aren't any fun either; they focus on repetition like a real life training session would whereas I'd rather do something fun, like alley-oops.

There are a load of fun features and customizations to play with. Most of it really cool and well setout. I didn't like the Player DNA section, it did really mean much to me but I suppose such esoterics may be appreciated by hoop fans.

The actual game is beautiful to watch; players, crowds and details are stunning. The most noticeable part is the crowd noise, great to listen too, making the game very immersive.

For the price it is now, worth getting.

2001: A Space Odyssey BluRay

I reviewed 2001 here a while ago. A scifi classic and must have for fans of the genre.

Is the BluRay worth it?

Short Answer; Yes! I am a sceptic of older movies on BluRay. The quality can only be as good as the master copy, no matter how much re-mastering one does. 2001 on BluRay defies this. Some of the scenes are stunning; from the opening landscapes, to the sleek lines of space flight and of course the famous jump scene.

Further, the famous sound track is rich and beautiful, particularly if you have a modern sound set up.

Definitely worth upgrading or getting if you do not own it already.

Exit through the gift shop (2010)

Exit through the gift shop is a comedy/documentary that explores a Frenchmans eccentric ride to the top of the art world. Drawing heavily from the street art scene and artists such as Banksy, the movie follows the LA natives ad-hoc journey to make a street art documentary. Along the way you will see a great selection of undercover film of the artists at work; for fans of the art, it will be memorable for this alone.

Aside from the underground clips of Space Invader and co. making their mark, the movie does well to symbolise many themes and issues of the art world. For many, it will be merely ink in themes that have been done to death and for others it will salt the cynical wound.

Nonetheless it does come together quite well. Banksy's wit added to Mr. Brainwashes eccentrics make for a good chuckle. Whether is all "real" or "well made fake" is beside the point as cold finger up the street art bum is very real.

Worth seeing.

The Hurt Locker (2008)

The Hurt Locker is an Academy Award Winning drama that explores the action and psychology of bomb disposal experts in war torn Iraq.

The Hurt Locker is a gripping and informative expose of a world we rarely see in this detail. The characters are well explored and the story interesting to the end. It is beautifully shot and would be fantastic in blu ray. The direction is fantastic, with some scenes shot from peculiar or distant angles that help immerse oneself in the moment.

Worth a buy.

xXx: State of the Union BluRay is part of the line of xXx action movies. Ice Cube replaces Vin Diesel as xXx and world saving heroics ensues.

A typical action movie with typical action movie elements. This actually was better than I thought. It was funny in its stupidity and I suppose it achieved it aim in some brainless fun.

Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3)

GTA 4 on PS3 is a sand-box style of game that comes in a long line of games from Rockstar. As the name suggests, much of the gameplay revolves around stealing cars but is nowhere near limited to that only. The sandbox element allows the payer to do anything they choose in the New York themed sand box, which may include boating, helicopters, mugging, shooting, police chases and buying hotdogs.

The New York replica is fantastic. The attention to detail form Rockstar is amazing which adds to various other elements; like a setting sun spreading a warm glow or rain making pavements sleek and reflective.

The sound also is immersive. Accents and languages as well as frequent coarse language flow through the environments as you travel through areas.

Gameplay is also improved on recent releases. Thankfully, Rockstar have removed many odd missions that frustrated me, like flying miniature planes.

The GTA will rank as the best in the series and up with the best of all time.

Parental Info: GTA 4 has heavy adult themes, violence and coarse language. It is an adult release and should be treated as so much by parents.

A must have PS3 game.

Avatar is a sci-fi/fantasy epic set in far off land Pandora. When the natives are threatened by a human mining operation, a human reverts to unusual methods to save the day.

Avatar was released as a 3D and 2D version and it broke box office records. The cinema 3D experience was breathtaking and memorable. Despite being half and hour too long audiences remained rivetted and immersed.

The BluRay brings the high-def version to the TV. Is it worth the buy and the time? No.

Despite being sensationally spectacular and immersive, the 2D movie is quite boring. The story is so simple and takes so little risks it really was not fun to watch for 3 hours. Avatar was never about the story, it's as formulaic as it comes; it was always about the 3D and will continue to be.

Wait for a 3D release for this one.

The Hangover (2009)

The Hangover is a comedy about a Vegas Bucks party that goes wrong. Four friends go the Vegas to have some fun, instead chaos ensues.

It is a very clever movie. The guys have no recollection of anything that had happened but are slowly shown some very curious and funny clues. It is well written and it works really well.

After so many twists and turns I was expecting a cracking finish; but was let down with a safe ending of what you might see in a drama.

Worth Renting.

Angels and Demons (2009)

Angels and Demons is a drama adventure based on the Dan Brown novel series featuring The Da Vinci Code and the symbolist character Robert Langdon. Robert is called to the Vatican again to help uncover the mystifying code of an apparent Vatican breach by the Illuminati. Intrigue and murder ensue until a thrilling end.

Tom Hanks is the highlight as Robert in a movie that takes a long time to build the suspense but finally prevails in giving us a cutting edge. There will be no shocks to anybody who has read any of Brown, however the screen play is well adapted from the novel and retains its intrigue. Along with some fine cinemaography, Angels and Demons delivers on several fronts.

Well worth renting.

District 9 is a sci-fi action that revolves around a South African alien shanty town. When the humans decide to remove the aliens, carnage ensues; when the leader of the humans and a meek alien cross paths they have to team up to save themselves.

District 9 is shot is in a very interest method. It is almost a half movie half documentary in a fictional sense that gives the movie an interesting feel. The CG effects and visuals are fantastic.

An interesting movie but only if you can handle sci fi. Worth getting on blu-ray.

Towelhead (2008)

Towelhead, also known as Nothing is Private, is a sexually abrasive, race drama that follows the tale of a young teenage, Arab Amercian girl and her journey into the first stages of puberty. She has to deal with an autocratic yet loving father and an obsessed, manipulative neighbour.

Towelhead is quite 'in your face'. It it only a well directed camera and shrewd editing that keeps it from an R rating. However these taboo scenes help illustrate what a young girl goes through, the embarrassement, the confusion and, eventually, the growing up.

Further to that, it also tries to delve into some racial tensions, between Arab's, Whites and Blacks; all Americans. To an extent, it does so quite well; but its no Crash. I am almost tempted to say that the movie bit off more than it could chew; however it does shed some light on racial prejudices in the States.

Towelhead is well worth seeing although some of the content may upset. Worth Renting.

The Amityville Horror (2005)

The Amityville Horror is a movie based on a novel and allegedly based on real events of a haunted house in Long Island. The house was the scene of a terrible multiple murder, and when a another family move in, events seem to be repeating themselves.

This horror is quite thrilling. It does a really good job at making one jump and some scenes are quite horrific. It is hard to find a horror that doesn't fall into the stereo-type, ie. rain and thunder, unfortunately Amityville doesn't either.

Nevertheless, you could do much worse looking for a horror and I think its worth renting.

Terminator Salvation (2009)

Terminator Salvation is fourth in the long running series of Terminator movies. Salvation, for the first times explores the future and the battle for human liberation from the machine oppressors.

As a child, after watching T1 and T2, I always wanted to see what the future held, what it looked like and how it felt. Salvation goes a long way in fulfilling some of that expectation. Unfortunately, unlike T1 and T2, salvation dissolves into a stock standard action film with themes that have been done to death.

The action scenes are frenetic but mostly computer generated, which always rubs the shine off for me. Nonetheless, Salvation does look fantastic and is otherwise very well made.

For Terminator fans, a must see and otherwise, a very good action film - a step up from Terminator 3.

Ironman (2008)

Ironman is an action superhero movie that tells the tale of how Tony Stark, a filthy rich weapons developer, who develops an Iron Man suit to become the Superhero, Ironman.

Ironman has your typical superhero elements; you have your high tech gadgets, defiance of the law of gravity and physics and some great, over the top fight scenes and villians. With all these elements, Ironman does really well, its great to look at and is made really well.

What I like about Ironman is that it does explore some other issues - like how some black market American weapons are being used abroad or curruption within the US.

For fans of the Superhero movie, Ironman is well worth it.

Amelie (2001)

Amelie is a French comedy about a shy, benevolent young woman who decides to improve other peoples lives. Life becomes hard when it comes time to improve her own love life.

Amelie is a quirky and cute comedy that is probably not a side splitter but keeps you smiling the whole way through. The effort of reading subtitles is well worth it. The movie interwoven with interesting characters and fascinating scenes. It's really worth watching - for a happy 2 hours or so.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjama's in a drama set in World war 2 Germany. A German war general gets promoted and shifts his family to a house near a concentration camp. His family struggle to cope while his adventurous son befriends a young Jewish boy and slowly learns the horrible truth.

The Jewish genocide is an emotional topic that has produced many stories. This is a simple story that still hits a horrible truth. It's the child's perspective that drives this plot. The kind of simple child logic that seems so normal.

It's very worth watching.

Quantum of Solace (2008)

Quantum of Solace is the latest of the James Bond branded line of movies. Bond chases a rebel tycoon, who is corrupting politics in Bolivia to gain wealth.

I find it really hard to give a good synopsis of the plot - because who really cares. I don't. I didn't really pay attention and what I did hear was much the same as any other Bond I have seen. But we're not judging Bond on plot. We judge it on action, women and cars.

The action scenes were filmed in the handycam way - shaky and very edgy. It gives the scenes a frantic nature but I think some people won't like that. Personally, I liked how it was shot very much; probably the best aspect of the film.

We also have the cars. The movie starts with a great chase, like Fast and the Furious, but doesn't revisit the sportscar after that. The typical female element is watered down on previous Bond's and the gadgets are almost non existant (generally the best thing about Bond). It's almost as though they decide to take Bond much too seriously - which is its downfall. That is not what Bond is about.

Worth renting for Bond fans - otherwise look elsewhere.

Fast and Furious (2009)

Fast and Furious is an action movie based around the illegal street racing scene. It stars Vin Diesel who sets out on a mission of revenge and vengeance.

What follows is a typical action movie make up. There's shooting, women, fighting and cars. It really aims it self at the teenage boy, computer game playing, gadget loving type. There's also a fair attempt to build a plot, which seems odd against the backdrop of over the top action. Is there really any point?

There needed to be more car racing to keep the interest up - being the only real strength of the movie. Indeed, the first car scene is well worth seeing; the remainder is a mere blur in a CG mess.

So if you like cars, the computer game type of cars and stupid action movies, this is for you. Still, you'll probably have more fun on the PS3.

Yes Man (2008)

Yes Man is a comedy starring Jim Carrey about a man who has an incredible epiphany at a self help seminar that changes his life from dull and diffident to exciting and successful. The story leads him to fall in love with a girl and a big promotion.

Yes Man is essentially run of the mill American comedy; it's fun but the jokes aren't side splitters. It has the typical jaw dropping moments that ad a spark; but it doesn't differentiate it from all the comedies one see's. Jim Carrey is perfect for the role however it won't be remembered as his best.

In the end, I can say Yes Man is worth a watch, but one watch only. Worth Renting.

Matrix Revolutions (2003)

Matrix Revolutions is the third in the Matrix series that deals with a resistant human population waging a war with machines, in real life and virtual reality. In Revolutions, boandaries are blurred; Neo virtual powers start working in real life and virtual nemesis, Agent Smith gains a real life persona. Added to the mix, the machines attack the human base, leading to carnage.

Revolutions is the most' out there' of the movies although they are all well outside the box. Its action scenes are more sci-fi and more incredible and the concepts are more profound. This may annoy some but it didn't for me. I enjoyed the first two movies and as such, Revolutions was, and is, a must see. Its the exclamation point on the matrix sentence.

In the end I can't help judge this movie based on where the Matrix story ended. It wasn't exactly the story I had hoped for after the initial release - I think the producers took the easy way out of not giving us an overall outcome at all. I just wanted somebody to win.

Nevertheless, you will need to see it, if you liked the first two. worth buying.

Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Matrix Reloaded is the second of the trilogy of the Matrix series - which deals with the humans battle with an enslaving machine race through a false computerized reality. The second of the trilogy deals with Neo's attempt's to save the human base from total annihilation from the machines - through the matrix.

Matrix Reloaded is a great action sci fi movie. Where the Matrix introduced some intriguing concepts and made one think about ones surrounding, Reloaded builds on characters; reveals political allegiances and beliefs and delivers some memorable action scenes.

For that alone it is well worth buying, but if you like the original its a no brainer.

The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix is a sci fi action adventure starring Keanu Reeves that explores the concepts of computers controlling our lives. Reeves' main character Neo is selected to view the real truth about the world we live in and the shock takes time to wear off. Eventually Neo finds he feet and learns what he can't do and what he can.

The Matrix is another in a long line of movies that explores the concept of computers or machines taking over the world and humans resisting (see: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Terminator 2). Therefore, it isn't particularly cutting edge in terms of plotline. Nonetheless, the Matrix does give a new modern edge to the concept and explores some very interesting idea's about our modern world. It is also a visual masterpiece of computer graphics - almost worth seeing for this alone.

At times the dialogue is poorly written leading to some poor acting; but all in all a very good sci fi release with a cult following. Worth buying.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is the third in the series of sci fi action movies that deals with time travel and a war against super intelligent machines. T3 recounts the period directly before the war - where the machines take over and how the resistance tried to stop them.

Overall, T3 is a major disappointment. It had a high standard to live up to and it didn't make the grade. There are many aspects that make one cringe and it has a tackiness about it. I had the impression that some people sat down, thought about what it was that made T1 and T2 so popular and then put in as many elements as possible. For example, the Terminator can remotely control other machines - thus she proceeds to controls some cars to try and kill whilst driving a truck. It just didn't work; some girl playing with cars.

One would think such an advanced piece of technology would be able to find a much more efficient way to kill somebody, ie. grab a gun, go to their house and kill them (as in T1 or T2).

In the end, the essence of T1 and T2 was lost in T3, and I doubt there is much re-watch value. Rent it.

The Terminator is an action sci fi movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the villain, the Terminator. He is sent from the future by a rebellious and intelligent robotic army the kill Sarah Connor, the mother of John Connor, the leader of a future resistance movement.

The Terminator, although looking dated, is top notch sci fi. It has everything including Arnie, great action, a frantic ending and very interesting science fiction themes. It deals with time travel and its paradoxes that, for some people anyway, is interesting to think about.

Not as good as Terminator 2, but classic nonetheless. Worth Buying.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Terminator 2 is a sci fi action adventure starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator. He has come from the future to protect a young a boy who ends up leading a resistance in the future. The resistance is against robots and cyborgs and they too have sent an assassin from the future to kill the boy.

Terminator 2 is classic sci fi. It made headlines at the time for its big budget and immense special effects. That didn't detract from a movie that has it all; great stunts, interesting concepts, some humour and even a poignant ending. It is rare for a sequel to improve on an original, especially in sci fi, but I think T2 did.

For me, this movie was out just about when I started watching movie's. So I'll always remember that. A classic, worth buying.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the classic movies, often ranked the best or one of the best by many critics. It's a drama about a wrongly imprisoned banker, played by Tim Robins, who slowly learns the ropes of prison life and eventually hope drives him to attempt an escape.

Like the critics, I think its fantastic. It tells stories of courage, despair, good and evil, crime and punishment and perhaps most significantly hope. The acting , music and photography is fantastic. Morgan Freeman plays his best role including the narrator's role - while nobody else can faulted.

I think Shawshank is great because it leaves one with a fantastic feeling, and it does so simply. No fantastic plot twist or over bearing message of 'be good or else'. Shawshank relies on a great story and well played characters. It most certainly delivers.

A must buy.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

2001: A Space Odyssey is a classic sci-fi movie from the director Stanley Kubrick. It recounts a story of a space trip gone wrong, where a computer "fails" and puts the lives of the human inhabitants at risk. However, to summarise the plot in one sentence is nigh on impossible. Odyssey achieves a depth of meaning and self awareness that few movies can match.

It is the classic sci fi movie. I can begin with the sound track. It will be instantly recognisable to most as it has been used endlessly since its creation. Odyssey is also a visual masterpiece - unparalleled for its time in ingenuiety and creation. The plot delves into robotics, artificial intelligence, human conscience and other points that will require a rewatch, and maybe, a rethink.

Perhaps one can say it takes a while to get started. But the slow start rewards the patient viewer with a movie to remember.

Worth buying this.

Gran Torino (2008)

Gran Torino, starring a Clint Eastwood, is a drama about a clamy old man coming to grips with the loss of his wife, his asian neighbourhood and his growing relationship with one particular shy boy.

It's a great performance by Clint Eastwood, portraying a gun totting veteran with a grumpy demeanor. The story progresses slowly to describe the happenings of the rough area that they live in, how the young boy grows up and what some bad people do. The ending is a bang that is worth waiting for; original and thought provoking.

This is well worth your time - worth buying.

Step Brothers (2008)

Step Brothers is a comedy starring Will Ferrell. It tells a tale of how two 40 year old, unemployed bums come together (because their single parents marry) and how they come to like each other despite all odds.

In the theme of 'being out of one's comfort zone', these two men find they are more similar then they thought. Through this curious mix of characters, beliefs and hobbies; the jokes flow. Some are more funny than others - but it mostly play's out quite well. I know I laughed a fair bit.

In the end a slightly above average comedy that you probably won't come back to - worth renting.

The Pink Panther (2006)

The Pink Panther is a comedy set in Paris about a bungling cop that tries to solve a high profile murder case. This cop is chosen specifically to be incompetent to thus put a shining light on his superior and give him the accolades.

This is essentially the depth of the whole movie. Its a Steve Martin showcase. He is given the role to carry the movie. It is not his best role by a stretch, not by his own fault, he doesn't have very much to work with. Nonetheless, the Pink Panther does deliver modest laughs.

A rental for Martin fans.

The Bank Job (2008)

The Bank Job is a an action packed drama about a bank heist in the 70’s in London. It revolves around a small time bunch of thieves who are overwhelmed by the magnitude of what they have done, thus they must act quickly if they are to keep the loot.

The Bank Job is a very interesting story that has 2 or 3 dramatic and political subplots; adding depth to the typical bank heist movie. The ‘based on a true’ story concept gives the movie yet more weight. I found the cinematography really quite enjoyable and the attention to detail was quite interesting.

However, with all these good points, the Bank Job doesn’t quite deliver. There is quite a lot of talking and explaining and not enough action. Of course, there was no choice but to portray the political aspects of the film. Its quite interesting in its own sense and does improve towards the end but not quite on the same level as the Italian Job.

Worth renting – one watch will do.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Slumdog Millionaire is a dramatic love story of sorts, about the life of a young and poor Indian boy who is accused of cheating in India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

The movie goes on to retell the brief but eventful life of this boy in long and detailed flashbacks. In parts it reminds me of City of God (just vaguely) but otherwise the story is very unique. The cinematography is stunning; depicting the slums of India quite vividly. It cannot be faulted in any real way.

This is a must see - worth the hype.

Seven Pounds (2008)

Seven Pounds is a drama starring Will Smith that recounts one mans profound quest. The quest is shrowded in mystery until the deouement, with facts only slowly given to the viewer in dribs and dabs - thus in many ways, it is all very cryptic.

Will Smith, yet again, is fantastic in this curious role. His facial expressions often give the only clue to the slowly evolving story. The story, perhaps basic, is given depth by the style; which inlcudes the slow offering of facts and momentary flashbacks. The beaufitul photography ads another fantastic element to the movie.

One could feel betrayed that the story tellers, so blatantly, withold facts for most of the film. Yet, one doesn't. The story offers such a profound ending that it makes it all worthwhile.

I have purposefully given very little away. Worth renting or buying.

Zack and Mirri Make a Porno (2008)

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a comedy about a couple housemates who run out of money and decide to try a new way to make some fast cash. Can you guess how?

Its seems that movie plots are becoming desperate to grab a niche market; such as here. This release, obviously, isn't for everybody. It starts of nicely. It's cute and sets up a curious dilemna. It descends into stupidity with mild laughs and ends up being quite boring. The laughs are as predictable as they get and the supporting cast are mostly unfunny.

Don't bother, even if you are in a kinky mood, go elsewhere.

Stargate Continuum (2008)

Continuum is the second DVD release movie in the epilogue to the immense Stargate SG-1 series. Whereas the Ark of Truth concluded the Ori plot, Continuum brings to a close the Goa'uld system lord Ba'al's plot line.

If you remember from the series, Ba'al created a whole pile of clones of himself; thus leaving the story line open to interpretation. Continuum closes this thread and is fundamentally based around the concept of time travel and the paradoxes which can ensue.

It is a very interesting plot, perhaps more so than Ark of Truth. It is splendidly shot on location; including the arctic and the actors take a shine to their roles; which are different to what they may have been used to.

Its great to see Jack O'Neal back for one last hurrah as well as most of the characters that have played a part in recent memory; including Apophis. So, for the fans, this is a great good-bye. I'm not sure others will find it appealing but definitely worth buying.

Walk The Line (2005)

Walk the Line is a biopic of country singing sensation, Johnny Cash. It follows his early life, the loss of his brother, his musical career and substance abuse and finally his love life.

Walk the Line is comprehensive, and seemingly, accurate. Released posthumously, Walk the line is a riveting movie It is superbly acted and filmed. It entertains and informs and thus does well in its purpose.

It suffers perhaps, in that it ends quickly and one tends to want other issues explained. Alas, the movie can only be so long. Worth Buying.

Heat is an action drama from the mid nineties starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. It follows the story of a bunch of crooks who daringly rob a bank despite the police being on their tale.

Heat is a classic action flick. Al Pacino vs Robert De Niro is great viewing, they are cunning, they are ruthless and, along with Val Kilmer, they really gel well. It also follows the plight of the female interests of the men and the various issues. Thus Heat is deeper than your average action flick. It is also beautifully shot and has a tremendous cast.

This one is well worth watching, particularly if you have liked Michael Mann movies.

The Black Balloon (2008)

The Black Balloon is an Australian drama about a typical Australian family with a twist, one of the teenage sons is Autistic (as well as a dash of ADD). The story follows the trials and tribulations of their other son, who befriends a beautiful girl and is bound to expose his eccentric family.

The Black Balloon is real. Its hilarious and tragic. Its abrasive and its loving. It's driven by the characters which are portrayed fantastically, led by Toni Collette, who gives another great performance. It's beautifully shot as well, portraying the Australian feel quite well, it could as well be around the corner.

The Black Balloon is well worth watching if not buying. Its a character driven narrative that is completely engrossing.

The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)

The X Files is based on a sci-fi television series, about two FBI partners, Mulder and Scully, who seek the truth of unexplained and mysterious events. In this movie, a simple missing persons case turns mysterious when a former priest has visions of the whereabouts of the person.

The story unravels as you may expect of the X Files. Mulder chases a lead that everybody has given up on, Scully has her doubts and doesn't (want to?) believe. In the end, the plot doesn't give a definitive answer on what is right or indeed who was right. That has always been the X files strength - the element of reflection.

It continues here in much the same fashion. The movie explores concepts of belief and logic as well as some 'real life' issues that the world may experience these days. All in all, the X Files delivers very well. If you want all the answers, you won't find them here, but you will be entertained.

Buy if you are a fan - rent for the rest.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

The fourth installment of the action adventure series, Indiana Jones, tells the story of a missing extra-terrestrial relic, a glowing skull with amazing powers. The story depicts the race to secure the relic for good, and has the usual twists and turns of any Hollywood action.

Although I liked the three preceding installments, the fourth didn't succeed in interesting me. It was tame, predictable and I couldn't help thinking that it was a money grab by the studio. True, some of the stunts were astonishing (all done by the stunt men, not CG) but this is small justification in making this DVD purchase.

In the end, the CG and sci-fi elements are the main failings of this title. Both elements feel out of place; they feel forced. The first three movies were clever and interesting. The fourth was boring.

Burn after reading (2008)

Burn after Reading is a comedy by the Coen brothers featuring a very solid cast; Clooney, Pitt amongst others. I revolves around the chance discovery of a disc containing some classified information and one woman's quest to get the cosmetic surgery that she 'needs' to find love.

Its a crazy kinda of story, true. However, this is a character driven movie. The plot is almost arbitrary, they could almost be a bunch of frog breeders vying for top place. With that in mind, the Coen brothers do deliver a comical bunch of caricatures that engage your attention and make you laugh. It's thus a really good view - the 96 minutes disappear in a flash.

Thus it must be taken a success. It is funny. It doesn't drag. It has memorable moments. I can criticise that the plot comes to a very abrupt end, but I won't because as I mentioned, it's not about the plot.

Worth watching - worth renting.

The Bridge (2006)

The Bridge is a documentary that discusses and delves int the most common site for suicide in the world, the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.

Camera's were focused on the bridge through a year. As such, many failed and real attempts are caught on camera. The documentary scratches beneath the surface, finding the lost souls family and describes the stories, the tragedies.

The Bridge is very real and very hard hitting. It's personal and sorry. I was immensely shocked after seeing it. Such a documentary could have gone down the path of statistics or comparison. Luckily it doesn't. It keeps the story real. Thus it delivers it message - a profound message of realism and despair. There are people crying for help, somewhere, silently.

Wall.E is the latest animation from the Pixar studio's. Wall.E is a humble garbage compacting robot that is left behind on abandoned Earth. He continues to collect and compact rubbish but also develops a taste for companionship. Soon, a scout robot arrives and Wall.E is off on an adventure of love and ulimately to save Earth.

Perhaps expectedly, Wall.E is amazingly well rendered. It's more than a movie; its art. One can't help but sit back and marvel at the richness of the image, even adults will be captivated.

In terms of plot and characters, it is a children's movie and thus delivers for the kids. The characters are exaggerated and so are the events and happenings. Noentheless, there are a few subtle cues to other movies that adults may appreciate, like links to Space Odyssey and other sci-fi movies.

What I really like is the message. Many adults could learn a fair bit from Wall.E but I can't help but be impressed at the message that is delivered to kids. Its about the future and its about being pro-active about the planet.

There have been two great movies in 2008 that I'd like to comapre; Dark Knight and Wall.E. Both masterpieces but I have to say Wall.E will probably be the more influential movie for years to come. Parents will want to show this to their kids - it'll be a must watch.

Rambo (2008)

Rambo is forth movie in the Rambo series starring Sylvester Stallone. Rambo is set in Burma, where the ex-US military man and hero John Rambo, is called in to help a group of humanitatarian workers which he had reluctantly helped gain pasaage into the counrty. Rambo along with some supercillious merceneraies are entrusted to withdraw the civilians peacefully.

It is a typical story but Rambo does stand out in several ways. It is beautifully shot and very well produced. It also stands out through its brutality. No suprise you may say of the Rambo series. However, it is thoroughly graphic in its portrayal of death and in some parts the abuse of women. In a certain way, it gives the movie some depth and meaning in reality. One thinks, this is happening somewhere in the world. One the other hand it will shy some people off this release.

Further to that point, the body count seemed to increase as the time goes on, ending in a soup bowl of fire and death that was meaningless and hard to follow. Rambo sprayed bullets ceaselessly while otehrs were playing the part of kill machines. It was a confusing battle at the end of a fairly well thought through movie.

Worth renting.

Taken (2008)

Taken is an action adventure thats sees a bright eyed American teenager and her friend kidnapped just as they start their European adventure. Its up to her estranged and over protective father to sort things out.

It is a fairly typical story - the father, and ex military type uses his skill and his guile to find clues and get his daughter back from the Parisian underworld. There are parts that are distressing - the scenes of women being prostituted and drugged isn't pleasant but adds to the credibility of this movie.

In the end it is Hollywood and typically the body count is high, there are holes and pieces on information missing and the closing scenes are typically sparse of any provactive "take home" message.

To sum up - quite light viewing despite some heavier topics. Worth a rental.

The Castle (1997)

The Castle is a classic Australian comedy based in Melbourne, which follows the story of a working class family's attempt to save their home from forced displacement due to airport expansion.

The Castle depicts working class and bogan Melbournites so well. Being from Melbourne, its just rings so true. But it also has a great David and Goliath message; where the little guy can fight and can win.

It's also so memorable for some great one liners that have entered the Australian vernaculars.

Worth a watch.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight is the next incarnation of the modern revival of Batman. This time, we see three villains on the screen; the Joker, Two-face and the scarecrow in a bit part role. Batman comes across a different type of criminal; one not in it for the money, and thus his constitutions and will power are tested to the limit.

This superhero action epic has everything you want. Action, adventure and thrills to the extreme. It has epiphanies and provokes thought about humans and the standards that we keep. It also has a great cast, great visuals and effects and an immersive sound score.

It rates very highly - and I doubt there has been a superhero movie to match it yet. Batman Begins was great, this is better yet. Heath Ledger's 'Joker' is worth the cinema ticket in itself.

I could type more and more, but that will spoil.

Hancock (2008)

Hancock is a different kind of super hero action adventure. The superhero, Will Smith, is a delinquent who finds a helping hand and rehabilitation. In the latter half of Hancock, the movie shows us who Hancock is, how he grows, as well as a twist and turn.

Set in LA, the movie has a great first half, a uniquechange on a worn out concept, the super hero. He isn't that great, people don't like him, more a nuisance. And the ensuing rehab is quite fun and interesting. The movie then goes on to introduce a female interest and reveal Hancock's secrets. Here it gets a bit forced and contrived. Its a super hero movie! I don't really want to see some forced emotional connection between two or three characters - in an attempt to deepen the movie. I wanna see action. It doesn't quite work out in Hancock and it all ends up suffering.

There are some great visuals with a glimpse of what Michael Mann can do to a movie. All in all its very nicely made. It wasn't quite the immense cinema experience I was expecting.

Worth renting perhaps with a solid lead cast and left field plot.

Goal II: Living the Dream (2007)

Goal II is the sequel to Goal, a drama series where a poor Mexican boy fights against the odds to attaina professional football contract in England. The second in the series shows the same boy, Munez, transfered to the biggest club, Spain.

More money brings more pressure and this is how the plot evolves. The story turns out to be quite bland and predictable, professional, family and relationship trials and tribulations that you've seen before to death. Some of the football scenes are incredibly well shot; with plenty of familiar faces from Real Madrid including Beckham, which proves to be the only highlight.

My biggest irk is the product placement; it's way too obvious. For example, an 8 year old steals a super car and goes for a joy ride for no apparent reason apart from getting the badge onto the big screen. Lame, especially since there are a dozen shots of the car in the movie. Its doubtful the kid could drive a go-kart let alone a supercar. In the end, its a bore.

Don't bother this one unless your a big football fan.

Get Smart (2008)

Get Smart is spy comedy conceptually based on the spy comedy TV show of the same name from the 1960's. The story is the typical Control vs. Kaos plot, with Nuclear weapons and the presidents life at stake; no big surprises.

But Get Smart isn't really about the plot. Its about the characters and the comedy. It is very funny in some parts; in its scripting and dialogue as well as in action and goofs. I think it would be quite accessible even to those who hadn't seen the TV show, although probably not as enjoyable.

Inevitably, the movie is quite different; the characters and their relationships feel totally different (ie. I couldn't particularly remember 99 ever being hostile to Smart in the TV show). Of course the gadgets have a modern upgrade which is great.

There is definitely a focus on placing old Smart tricks and goofs while trying to modernize the story. Although feeling a bit forced at times it was mostly unnoticeable behind the laughs and chuckles.

So in the end, Get Smart is quite good for a laugh and to reminisce a little about the olden days (ie. Mid 90's reruns). Probably worth renting unless you're hardcore.

Rendition (2007)

Rendition is a political drama/thriller about a American man held captive on terrorist charges in the Middle East and his wife's attempts to free him. The plot also involves an Arab family involved with the case and a father's search for a missing daughter.

Rendition is definitely more drama than thriller. It barely roused my peaceful Sunday afternoon. It is, nonetheless, a very good movie; it have a compelling plot which is creatively expressed in various time frames. The few action scenes are very vivid too, well shot and very believable. A solid cast makes this a very good film.

It also achieves a fine balance between story and commentary. Although it probably doesn't explore any new ground, it does make its points well; showing us two sides of the war, the jihad, as well as the techniques of war. In this sense it is worth viewing, as I feel it does pursue an objective cause; the good and bad of both sides.

Well worth renting.

Cloverfield (2008)

Cloverfield is a thriller or horror based in Manhatten. It follows the experience of a young group of people; through their eyes, via the camcorder. That is how the entirety of the story is told, through the 1st person. If you don't like jerky action, perhaps steer clear.

This first person perspective is the main strength and the weakness as well. In one way; it gives a creative and innovative way of telling the story, which perhaps is a little light. On the other hand; it does tend to create holes in the story. Who, what and where's aren't always explained. In the end, I felt this did detract a little; but the lasting impression was made, nonetheless.

In all other aspects; it is all quite top notch, the imagery and sounds and immense and it is acted out proficiently.

Good action movie rental - or great blu-ray buy.

I Am Legend (2007)

I Am legend is a unique thriller/drama type, end of the world movie that can make you jump; a little. Robert (Will Smith ) is a scientist who helps find a cure for cancer. It mutates causing mass havoc and death. Manhattan island is isolated from the world to stop its spread, while Robert works in his apartment to try and find an antidote.

Its a very well made movie -it tells the story through 2 different time lines, withholding important information until one needs to see it. This gives a full impact. Its also edge off your seat stuff at times with wild beats and dark corners a plenty. It also plays out a sad tale of loss that is to be commended. Its very nicely shot and the CGI blends in well.

I don't have much to rave about here - not too many holes. Some minor actions could be explained better but in the end it doesn't detract at all.

Rent it.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth (2008)

Straight out, I am a Sci fi and Stargate fan. The Ark of truth is one of two movies that completes the SG-1 saga, with Season 10 ending the series, the movies tie up loose ends. In this case, the movie ties up the Ori race storyline.

I thought that this was going to be a just a double episode, straight to DVD. It wasn't; it is made to movie standards. For Stargate fans, you will see everything that you have enjoyed over the years (apart form a Jack O'Neil cameo). You get the close call; Sam saving them all with a late button press, Daniel using his wisdom as late as possible, Teal'c displaying his boundless courage and Cam his immense valour. So its all there - and Varla's pragmatism too.

Yet, I still think they shoved a whole seasons worth of content in 2 hours; thus we don't get the normal explorations, causes and effects and so on. For example; when the Goa'uld were destroyed we saw what happened afterwards, the effects. It would've been great to see that with the Ori - and to see Jack once more too, just one more wise crack.

Worth it for the fans.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Lars and the Real girl is a semi serious comedy about Lars, an introverted man who befriends a custom made fake girl ,which he ordered online, and makes her part of his life, his family's life and that of the town. They all come to know her and love her too in an odd tale based in a small wintery town.

It starts off slowly, but then steadily draws in details and depth, through subtle nuances and story telling. It had its funny moments too - as such a quirky tale would no doubt have. It does have some depth and meaning; thus it does cover many bases. Visually it is quite dreary, which puches ones focus in certain directions, so it is well made.

In the end it is a very enjoyable watch - without the killer punch, which I suspect was the aim.

The Number 23 (2007)

The Number 23 is a "mind bending" drama starring Jim Carrey. It based around the notion that the number 23 is buried in one way or another in everything that happens. The movie uses this concept to tell a story about one man's journey to find the truth, about the number, and everything.

In the end, I suppose the failing here is the 23 concept. Although very interesting; it does lack the firmer foundations that other paranormal movies find, like the Mothman Prophecies. Its quite easy to multiply or divide numbers in your chosen subjects to find 23. But how about all the other presidents that didn't die on the 23rd? Do you see; its too much of a stretch, which is stretched further by the use of 32. The movie isn't called The Number 23 and 32.

Leaving the cynicism behind, it is an enjoyable movie to watch. Jim Carrey was very good in a difficult dramatic role and it is shot very nicely. There are enough twists, turns and the depth to keep you well interested.

Thus, rent this one - good watch.

Crackerjack (2002)

Crackerjack is a light Australian comedy about the fight to save a lawn bowls club from an evil property developer.

I thought it to be quite funny; but I suppose thats because I know all the actors and comedians that play roles in the movie. The fact is that most of the actors are comedians - so perhaps the acting is a bit lacking. On the other hand, it's a fine Australian comedic cast - which does bring about some laughs.

This is for the Aussie film buffs out there - not a classic but worth seeing.

Superbad comes from the school of American teen comedy about sexual rite of passage - going to college initiated and a real man. Thus it has your typical ingredients, the slightly dorky and hormone crazed teen boys and the beautiful girls; and the crazy antics.

That there is bucket loads of. I must admit I did find it quite funny, surprisingly, for a movie like this, which I generallywouldn't watch. The story revolves around 3 boys and their quest for manhood. The movie documents their aim to get some alcohol for a party the girls are having. I think the casting of actors into characters was great - they all fit into their roles so well. Otherwise a steady film, very easily watched.

The movie is at its best with its quirky and unique COP characters. They add the edge to this otherwise typical Hollywood flick. One has to wonder who watches these movies over and over; they wouldn't be made if money wasn't made off them.

Catch it if your a fan of the genre.

Sicko (2007)

Sicko is Michael Moore's latest documentary that shines the light on America's health care system.

The stance I have taken with his documentaries is that I need to read somebodies rebuttal afterwards to get the full picture. Even without reading anything, one can see some of the techniques he uses to build his case. He shows that worst of American cases and puts them up against the best of the British, French etc., which is a great way to create a stark contrast; and anger.

Of course thats what he wants and thats what he achieves. So in that sense it is worth watching; and if it helps draw attention to the failings of the system, then that is great too. However, its also a great way to make many at the box office; and its hardly credible to claim to be a documentary when facts are twisted and contorted to fit his model.

It is not entirely transparent or objective as a documentary should be. It is also self serving in a part - which is disappointing. But I'll let you watch to see for yourself.

Worth seeing in any case, just make sure you read what others might say about it.

Into the Wild (2007)

Into the Wild is a dramatic portrayal of the real life events of Chris McCandless; and his quest for to be alone in the wilderness in Alaska. It tells the story in the present; his experience in Alaska and in the past; his journey to be in Alaska.

Into the wild is based on a novel of the same name, and although they tell the story differently, the movie, to my knowledge is quite accurate. It is a compelling view - probably more so because it is based on real events. It also draws one to think about the various influences of modern culture and the family unit - and what it does to young people. So it can be quite thought provoking and deep in parts.

It is very well shot and has an interesting soundtrack produced by Eddie Vedder. My only issue is that it dragged in a bit long, but in this case its not a major issue.

Rent it if you want something more thoughtful.

The Bucket List (2007)

The Bucket List is a comedy that details the action packed final months of two terminally ill patients. The two men, come from different lives, to be in the same place and in the end work together to achieve their goals they set out to do before their deaths.

The movie is quite simple and straight forward; and very enjoyable. It is mostly funny through Jack Nicholson's epigram's and witticism's; but not limited to that - Freeman is funny too. Putting the co-star's together, one can notice a slight difference in acting ability. Maybe its only because Jack is so good - but Morgan Freeman is just not quite so good when put on the same stage.

I also like this movie - because beyond the laughs and the fun it does have a profound message to pass on; and it does so quite well. So, in a sense, it is a fulfilling cinema experience; despite a light plot.

I also noticed a big goof - that is, glasses on, then off and then oon in quick succession. But I'll let it slide. Not much the carry on about with this one.

Catch it if you're after some light viewing.

The Brave One recounts a story based in Manhattan, a radio journalist/editorialist loses her fiance in a brutal mugging and turns herself from a shattered flower into a vindictive vigilante. All the while she befriends a good cop who ends up on the case, with odd results.

I really like how The Brave One is shot. It captures the Manhattan cityscape perfectly; from subways to birds-eye views of the streets. Sound also plays an important and interesting part of the story. It probably falls down in its story; a bit far fetched for a drama, things being all too convenient (ie. like no witnesses to ashooting over and over); however it is mostly very sharply written and acted too. I did like the fact that it ended in an atypical Hollywood way.

It is an enjoyable view; with a good cast. Worth watching in the cinema.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)

National Treasure: Book of Secrets is a riveting adventure of a treasure hunt and conspiracy from the early days in US history. Of course, there are two different folk after the treasure, family names to uphold, gadgets and puzzle solving.

Of course, it does get a little far fetched, but I didn't mind at all. The story and the various concepts were interesting - and most importantly - entertaining. All the various aspects come together very smoothly.

The acting is solid enough and in general it is well made. It doesn't surprise me that it did so well at the US box office.

So definitely worth seeing at the movies if you get a chance.

Blue Harvest: Family Guy (2007)

Blue Harvest is actually an hour-long episode of Family Guy, which for some reason I thought was a full feature. The power goes out in the Griffin house, and Peter retells the 1st (or 4th) Stars Wars episode through his eyes.

It is very funny if you like Family guy. Its typical piss takes and satire that won't disappoint - if that's your idea of comedy.

What my problem is, is that I have seen it in shops in the movie section. I have also seen box sets with a whole lot of extras; like 3D goggles and an extra Family guy episode, for a feature film price.

There isn't any reason to pay this money for 1 episode of an animated comedy, when you can easily find one of the full seasons for the same price. Perhaps, you could get the same season with Blue Harvest in it for a good price.

I'd say dont buy it, wait until the season comes out.

Juno (2007)

Juno is a comedy/drama which chronicles a 16 year old's time in life where, she gives birth and looks to right her life by adopting the child out. I found this movie a little hard to classify; it has some deep and profound moments, but also threatens to be funny - but never fully succeeds.

Juno is similar to Eagle vs Shark. It's not as funny but it does handle some deeper issues. All the characters are quirky and interesting - which makes for some really fun viewing - but nothing one really laughs out loud for.

So its general, Juno is quite good, with a good cast - but not a great comedy, if thats what you're expecting.

Clerks II (2006)

Clerks II is the long awaited follow up to the 90's cult, black and white comedy, Clerks. The characters are older, in colour but not necessarily moved on. It chronicles the period right before Dante, and his 'dream' girl, are about to move on and away.

Of course there is calamity and comedy. Its a gross and repugnant (but somehow original) comedy which is very funny in some parts. It plays very linearly and is simple but the jokes do catch - making for good light viewing. Like the first installment, I thought the acting was well below average - lines of dialogue sounding like a read through. Otherwise the story is about on par with what is churned out of Hollywood.

So, all in all, its not a classic, but fans of the original or the genre won't be disappointed. Rosario Dawson's smile is something to savor and Kevin Smith (ie Silent Bob) has an epiphany that can't be missed.

American Gangster (2007)

American Gangster dramatically retells the story of an American gangster and mafia boss from the late 60's and 70's. Frank Lucas rises to fame after the mafia boss he works for dies. He then takes control of drug distribution in Harlem and succeeds through his entrepreneurial skills and military contacts.

The movie does drag on for a long time, recounting his days and the lengths taken to bring him to justice. This is, in a sense, the other half of the movie. Russell Crowe's character and his efforts to bring Lucas down and to be a good cop. In reality, I would have liked this side explored more. Crowe plays a flawed good cop, but his motives aren't fully disclosed . Like, for example, why he just suddenly decides he is a bad father and gives up fighting for custody of his son, mid-way through court proceedings. I wanted to know why he did that - that would have been just as interesting as seeing Frank Lucas come unstuck.

There are faux pas' that I must mention. Shooting a man in cold blood on a busy Harlem street and no repercussions? Sure your a mafia boss; untouchable? He did shoot another ring leader. Seemed odd.

Otherwise, it is a solid recount that will take your interest for all but 3 hours. It is beautifully shot and acted superbly - in many senses a must see. But I feel it won't reach the heights of many other classic gangster movies from the US. Time will tell.

Trainspotting (1996)

Trainspotting is often regarded the best British movie in the 1990's. It has the best of everything - drama to comedy but I enjoy it for its creativity and the story.

It details the life of a heroin addict and the his interactions with family and friends and his attempts to clean up. In the end, you find out who is he really is and what whether he's good or bad; and enjoy finding this out.

Trainspotting is full of memorable scene's - the toilet dive is a classic example. Its soundtrack is memorable, full of classic songs from the time and memorably, right at the beginning (Choose life). It also has scenes that can be challenging; not pleasant, but required for the story.

In the end, the story and characters tick Trainspotting along very nicely such that you'll want to watch it more than once (assuming that you're not t00 conservative).

Buy it.

Atonement is based in England, around the time of WW2. Its a drama and love story, about how a young girl ruins a young mans quest for love by jumping to conclusions and circumstance. The man is sent to prison and hence to the war. The rest you'll have to see.

Atonement has that old English pomp and prose, particularly in the beginning. In the style of literature, it builds the characters and uses imagery to portray events and feelings. Thus, it lacks action but in the end it is a love story and the ending is thought provoking. Its never about action, more hope and love.

I feel it does lose its way - cutting forward and back in time. I got tired of Atonement for a while, it seemed to stagnate, but in the end it did grab interest and reverberate a message. It is well made, some scenes spelling out the preverbial 1000 words. Good value for fans of the genre.

Death at a Funeral (2007)

Death at a Funeral is a British comedy that, basically, plays as it reads. It is based around one day at a funeral, and obviously, how it goes wrong.

It really starts a bit slowly and builds it characters; cliched and overacted as they are. I know, it is a comedy and thats to be expected, so no big deal. It keeps building its momentum until the final laughs are achieved and thats what like about Death at a Funeral. It has patience. It builds it up for the big moments - it doesn't overdo early scenes.

That makes it a must see comedy in my book. Even with the prevalence of poo. Funnily enough, the only other movie I could recall with poo, Trainspotting, has an actor in common, Ewen Bremner, or Spud in Trainspotting.

I haven't given much away - buy this one.
